"Contrary to some of the negative comments Nowhere Boy is quite good. For Sam Taylor Wood to have gone for a film in the style of 'Hunger' would have been an easy option which she could have pulled off. By delivering a film that focuses on the relationships head on rather that through artful abstraction work well.
The film is less about the Beatles even John Lennon but more about the complications of family. The film is an emotional menage de trois. Mimi played by Scott Thomas excels and has the more difficult role as her character needs to reveal over the course of the film. Ann Maria Duff gives Lennons mother an exhuberence and vitality that when Lennnon enters her world this is less like mother and son but soul mates or much more.
The back story about the formation of the Quarry Men is less interesting. This may have let down some punters who paid the ticket price expecting more Lennon with a dash of Beatle rather than a family drama.
For that I recommend the film Backbeat. Nowhere Boy is no classic but worth a watch as dross like Avatar roams our cinema screens like a viral weed."
