"Has its moments but there’s something wrong with the ‘proportions’ of it so that the size of the performances is too large for the small scale of the events and settings. The three leads all wind up looking mental and I’m not sure that’s its intention because it seems to finish with a standard, pat Hollywood resolution where everyone becomes self-aware. There are some good performances but Marisa Tomei as the mother of Cyrus throws the whole thing off with a big, dumb-sitcom style of performance, I think. Overall, the film lacks enough truth for the story and outcome to have either sincerity or any real meaning. It’s a very mainstream film that seems to be taking itself seriously when it has no cause to. Sort of alright but not good. And ric’s right, isn’t he? Some of the restless camerawork’s really pointless to a degree that it’s annoying."
