"this film was very dissapointing after all the rave reviews ive read. gosling was unconvincing as a balding older man, williams' acting style just means she spends most of the film looking nonspecifically sad/unhappy or withdrawn without much variation for the various nuances you might expect for a marriage in breakdown. the film strives too hard to show the pain and difficulties of difficult, ageing marriages. and it seemed underwritten. the best parts were when they were 'courting' in the early stages. partly as this was lighter and less self conciously heavy with profundity/pain, but just because this was the only time you sensed some sort of connection between the two leads. the rest of the time they seemed to be improvising or trying to conjure up something that the script rendered not so believable."
