"I could see the qualities in 'The Tree Of Life' but Malick didn't have an Admiral's hand on the tiller in this case. Not even a Captain's. And that's the shame of it. The artist Malick was present in Badlands and The Thin Red Line. There's a genius lurking in the fellow. As an architect, I know how hard it is to make a building how you want it. So I can get a vague idea of what poor Terence was up against here. But no matter what any of us think, the world is healthier because of artists who attempt what Marlick has attempted here. Look at the commercial dross pumped out by Hollywood and commercial TV and thank your lucky stars there are blokes like Marlick in there batting for the human spirit."
