Built in the 12th century as the church of St Nicholas of the English, the Bedestan was further enlarged in the 14th century and modified under the Venetians. Eventually it was given to the Greek Orthodox Church. During the Ottoman period, the building became a depot and market for textile products, before falling into disrepair. At present, the church is being renovated as part of the Nicosia restoration programme of the UN Development Programme.
