Originally Byzantine, the fort was rebuilt in the late 13th century by the Lusignans. It failed to protect the town from the Ottoman invaders in 1570 and was subsequently abandoned. Later it was used as a prison, but under British rule it became a dry goods storage area. It's now the focal point of the picturesque harbour area and serves as a backdrop to the Pafos opera festival which takes place here under the stars every September.
