Founded in 1888, this venerable museum houses the best collection of archaeological finds in Cyprus, covering the Neolithic to the Byzantine periods. Highlights include an exemplary collection of terracotta figures excavated in 1929 at Agia Irini in Morfou, and limestone lions and sphinxes from the Tamassos necropolis. The famous Aphrodite of Soli, which has become a symbol of Cyprus, also resides here. The small but pretty Municipal Gardens are located across from the museum, behind the Municipal Theatre.
