The Savoy, long a fixture of shabby 1970s chic that perfectly complemented the litter-strewn O'Connell Street has, like the street itself, finally had its face-lift. These days, it's in a timewarp of wood panelling and fake chandeliers, and has gone from atmospheric to anodyne, but the seats are definitely more comfortable and the box office more responsive, so many will accept the trade-off. The Savoy no longer has the largest screen in the city so isn't guaranteed the premières, but its location is prime, and it still trades on years of affection, so it remains integral to the festivals. Expect the usual mainstream blockbuster and rom-com programming.
