Founded in 1984, the Scottish Poetry Library is housed in an impressive contemporary building, one of the unlikely architectural surprises concealed down Edinburgh's closes. Robert Burns, unquestionably Scotland's best-known bard, is well represented on the library's shelves, but so are scores of other poets, writing in Scots, English, Gaelic or perhaps a language of their own invention. The library also has a small selection of books for sale, including works by local poets. Staff are happy to help with recommendations and will even try to help you track down a poem, even if you can only remember a line or two.
