Cramped, dowdy and clannish, the Oxford's bar area offers no space at all, and while the adjacent room has been given a lick of paint lately, it's still pretty basic. Sometimes it feels as if you have to be a member to drink here. So why come? Because it ploughs its own furrow, and doesn't give a toss about the white noise of contemporary style. It enjoys minor celebrity status as a favoured haunt of Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus (and, for that matter, Rankin himself).
