Three of the best club events in Edinburgh this week

It’s the Easter bank holiday weekend, although the city is strangely quiet despite it all. We guess that means that – once you’ve enjoyed some moody underground electronica from Holland and a taste of authentically feverish Balkan sounds – there’s only one place to be. Save it up for Saturday, when Desolat boss and former DC-10 resident Loco Dice arrives for his first Edinburgh show.

Juice with Applescal – Sneaky Pete’s, Thu Apr 2
His reputation’s still strictly under the radar, but that means that Dutch techno producer Pascal Terstappen has found the perfect partner in compact Cowgate rave bunker Sneaky Pete’s. With a handful of releases on Traum Schallplatten and his own emerging Atomnation label, he’s building a reputation for moody, techy sets which flit across boundaries from techno to primitive electro to nu-soul. His most recent recordings have been among his finest – check last year’s crunching electro groove ‘The Veil’ on Atomnation for a prime example of how he sets a mood.

Balkanarama – Studio 24, Fri Apr 3
Long describing itself as a ‘hot Balkan instrumental orgy’, this long-standing and still very popular club night takes the sounds of the Balkans – including klezmer, gypsy punk and more contemporary electronic sounds – and cooks them up into one big, frantic stew of traditional live playing and furious dancing, with bands and dancers generally booked for the occasion (this time round it's returning klezmer heroes Tantz). And if you need any help to get on the dancefloor yourself, a shot of the plum brandy should help sort you out.

Nightvision with Loco Dice – Liquid Room, Sat Apr 4
The Nightvision team are cracking open something special for the Easter weekend. Making his first ever appearance in Edinburgh at NV’s spiritual home the Liquid Room, the special headline guest will be Dusseldorf-bred house titan Loco Dice (pictured above), co-founder of the Desolat label and former DC-10 resident in Ibiza. A veteran producer not just on his own label but on such luminaries as Cocoon, Cadenza, M_nus, Ovum and Four:Twenty Recordings, he (Yassin Ben Achour, to give him his real name) strides the fine line between musical credibility and a superstar DJ’s reputation. This three-hour set will come with support from the Pulse and Animal Hospital residents out in the Annexe.
