This glorified pub function room and its assorted bar and restaurant areas comprise the plushest venue in town. The booking policy stretches to relatively leftfield names: Pharoah Sanders, the Blackbyrds and Ulrich Schnauss have all played, and Adrian Sherwood's mix of a Mark Stewart & the Maffia show took advantage of the to-die-for sound system in a way that no one has matched. Thursday's indie night Limbo mixes carefully curated triple bills of local, out-of-town and international acts. The main bar is populated at weekends by a cocktail-drinking crowd who seem to think they're in Sex and the City.
As well as nightclubs and rock gigs, this atmospheric venue has a taste for gothic cabaret and burlesque. Fitted out in black (black walls, black ceilings, black bar fittings) with gold trim on the Georgian cornicing, it's a perfect match for the rococo glamour of the alternative variety nights.
