Cramped, dowdy and clannish, the Oxford's bar area offers no space whatsoever; although there's a room adjacent, it's all still pretty basic, and it sometimes feels as if you have to be a member to drink here. So why come? Because it ploughs its own furrow, and doesn't give a monkey's about the white noise of contemporary style. It enjoys minor celebrity status as a favoured haunt of Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus (and, for that matter, Rankin himself).
