This big old city centre hotel has gone through three different identities in the last decade or so, becoming the Barceló Edinburgh Carlton in early 2008. Not quite in the same class as the Scotsman opposite or the Balmoral nearby, it's large and functional. The interior decor is grand in a 1980s kind of way, the rooms have great views - although those facing on to North Bridge can be a little noisy - and there's a small pool with a sauna and a steam room.
