Discreetly tucked away on a side road in Newington, the Salisbury merits praise for the standard of accommodation ('now' meets 'then' decor with all mod cons), the friendly approach from its staff, the breakfasts, the food in its Gabbro bistro and even the mellow space of its walled garden. You could splash out on a four-poster if you wanted, but all the rooms are handsome and very good value. It's about a mile from the Royal Mile.
