The house is run by the National Trust for Scotland and provides a window into how the upper classes lived during the 18th century. The rooms are packed with period furnishings and detail, right down to sugar cones, locked tea caddies, chamber pots and newspapers. The basement contains an informative video presentation; well-informed guides in each room are happy to answer questions. Just across the square is the headquarters of the National Trust for Scotland which
features four beautifully restored townhouses with galleries and a pleasant courtyard café in summer.
