The museum, previously known as the Museum of Scotland before merging with the Royal Museum, was judged to be the Scottish Building of the Year after its opening in 1998. Thousands of artefacts are on display, from small everyday objects to a steam locomotive. Grim relics of the darker side of Edinburgh's past are also on show, among them the Maiden of Edinburgh guillotine and an iron gaud which was used to restrain prisoners on the old Tolbooth. Be sure to check out the ramped entrance with its lovely frieze by the late Ian Hamilton Finlay.
