If there’s one problem with the Caves, it’s that it’s just not open often enough. Throughout August, comedy promoters Just the Tonic manage to turn it into one of the busiest Fringe venue complexes in the whole city, with sweating comedians and audiences of 50 or less packed into every available nook and cranny. Come September, though, it reverts to being a venue only for those gig and club promoters who put in the effort to seek it out – them and, if the website is to be believed, wedding reception organisers.
It’s a crying shame, as these crumbly walled subterranean vaults are among the most interesting spaces in the city, meaning the acts that do pass through this way are guaranteed a special, unique atmosphere on the night of their performance.
