The City Café was one of the first modern café-bars on the scene in the 1980s; these days, it feels as much a part of Edinburgh as the castle. The ground floor features a pool table and fill-you-up meals, to be devoured in the booths at the back or the more open seating at the front. It's packed with pre-clubbers at weekends; the late mornings bring a clientele in search of a serious breakfast.
