Mother India's empire in Glasgow expanded east in 2008 and set up here, offering an entire menu of starter-sized, tapas-style Indian dishes. The decision proved a very shrewd one: the restaurant has been a great success, and with good reason. The decor is simple and the cooking is impressive, with dishes that range from simple chickpeas and potatoes in yoghurt-based sauce to the livelier likes of king prawns and spiced haddock.

The way to get into popular Edinburgh eateries is to go early, like 5:30. You can get seated (probably not big groups but couples) as long as you get out by 7:30. That is how we got into this restaurant. Staff are wonderful attending to people's needs quickly. The decor is clean and comfortable. The food is amazing, served in small share portions and with plenty of spice and original flavors. The cracker and compote you start with is so flavorful but light so you still have room to try more items. The lemon/almond rice is a must have as are the prawns. The garlic naan is unlike most I have had in a very good way. The chai is authentic with bits of ginger and other spices. Tucked a bit off the Royal Mile it is a must stop for all appetites!
