Artisan Roast supplies quality coffee to cafés and restaurants, but in Broughton Street it has its very own premises. It's a laid-back spot, far from po-faced, dealing cakes and croissants, but the main attraction is the fresh-roast arabica. A sign wryly comments that JK Rowling did not write any Harry Potter on the premises, a claim made by all too many cafés these days.

Fantastic coffee made with skill. The best coffee I had in Edinburgh.
This café serves what is in my opinion the best coffee in Edinburgh. There are rumors &c. that they supply their coffee to Kilimanjaro, and if this is the case then its clearly a matter of it's not what you've got, but what you do with it. The flat whites are bitter, creamy, strong and sweet all at once. The unmissable note in all their coffee is that of an individual roast, that is present nowhere else in the city.
