Meadowbank has facilities for athletics, badminton, squash, basketball and football, as well as a velodrome; there are classes for children, adults and the over-50s in everything from archery to martial arts. The stand-out part is Meadowbank Stadium, which opened for the 1970 Commonwealth Games.
In 2006, a proposal arose to demolish it, sell off the land for housing and build a new centre elsewhere. Two years later, the scheme was in disarray, but the local authority still believes the stadium is in poor shape and in danger of permanent closure.
