One of the best places in Edinburgh to learn about natural science, with exhibits covering the Big Bang, evolution, extreme climates and more
Opened in 1999, Our Dynamic Earth is a Millennium Commission project and an element of the regeneration process which invigorated the Holyrood area of Edinburgh in advance of the Scottish Parliament Building being built there around the same time. A distinctive looking landmark in its own right, with a tented roof which mimics the sailmasts of a ship, it’s a science centre whose principal aim is to educate on the geological formation of the Earth.
Amongst various interactive and partially simulated galleries within the building, exhibits demonstrate to visitors the formation of the Earth from the Big Bang onwards, patterns of glacial activity and animals that have been made extinct by evolution, and travel to the depths of the ocean, the icy extremes of the polar ice caps and a tropical rainforest. Other features include the 360 degree immersive Show Dome experience and science education packages, while there is a café on site serving meals and kids’ lunches.
