Sofia Coppola's 'Somewhere' – trailer preview

On the evidence of this early trailer, Sofia Coppola is working within her comfort zone for her latest movie

It feels like an age since the last Sofia Coppola movie. It was way, way back in 2006 when her hyper-stylised historical drama 'Marie Antoinette' was released in cinemas, furthering Coppola's ongoing directorial project on the themes of culture shock and alienation. Finally, the first faint whispers (in the form of a trailer) can be heard of her forthcoming film, 'Somewhere', which looks like another movie about two people forced to navigate through a barrage of phonies and bottom feeders.

Whether you like her movies or not (and, let's be frank, they're an acquired taste), Coppola does have a rare ability to tease out career-best performances from her leads. We must admit to being intrigued and just a little frightened at the prospect of seeing if she's able to coax something formidable from terminal under-achiever, Stephen Dorff. Here, Dorff plays a bad-boy actor who decides to re-assess his priorities when visited by his estranged 11-year-old daughter played by Elle Fanning. It's the kind of movie that's tough to judge from the trailer – but what's evident is that Coppola is very much within her comfort zone: Dorff's character comes across like a younger version of Bill Murray in ‘Lost In Translation'.
