‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ helps book sales soar

The new film ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ helps boost sales of John Boyne's original novel

Book sales are being given a massive boost on the back of film adaptations, with Mark Herman’s acclaimed version of John Boyne’s family favourite, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ helping sales of the book to increase by 1,000 per cent and sending it to the top of the children’s book chart.

The trend seems to arise with books that have a political or historical slant, as other popular and acclaimed films that have helped to send their literary counterparts skyrocketing up charts in 2008 include ‘The Kite Runner’ and ‘Persepolis’.

Alongside the success of ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, Amanda Foreman’s historical biography version of ‘The Duchess’ is currently sitting atop the UK paperback chart as well, so it’s been a bumper month for the literary adaptation.
