Pfeiffer fancies 'Hairspray'

Michelle Pfeiffer is set to join John Travolta and Queen Latifah in the cast of the forthcoming musical.

Jul 17 2006

Michelle Pfeiffer is in final negotiations to play the villain in the forthcoming screen version of 'Hairspray'.

Based on the award-winning stage version of John Waters' cult flick, 'Hairspray' mark II would see Pfeiffer play Velma von Tussel, a former 'Miss Baltimore Crabs' who is now the embittered producer of a TV dance show.

Pfeiffer will join John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes and newcomer Nikki Blonsky in the musical, with Adam Shankman on directing duty.

'Hairspray' goes into production on September 5 for a Christmas 2007 release, and doubtless producers will be hoping that it fares better than Pfeiffer's last all-out musical effort, the excruciating 'Grease 2'.
