Jun 7 2007
Spike Lee has announced plans to make a WWII drama set in Italy and dealing with the experience of African-American soldiers.
'Miracle at St Anna' will be based on James McBride's novel about American soldiers fighting in the mountains of Tuscany and focus on the 92nd Division of all-black soldiers who had to contend not only with the Nazis but also with with racist, incompetent superiors.
'I met a black veteran who fought at Iwo Jima, and he told me how disappointed he was that there was not even one Afro-American [soldier] in Clint Eastwood's films' Lee told Italo newspaper.
'Miracle at St Anna' is set to shoot on Tuscan WWII combat locations next year.
