'Spider-Man' villain cast

The 'Sideways' star is to take on the webslinger in Sam Raimi's big-budget blockbuster sequel.

Sam Raimi has announced that Thomas Haden Church will be playing the villain in the next 'Spider-Man' movie.

Church, who was nominated for an Oscar for his wine-guzzling antics in last year's 'Sideways', follows in the footsteps of Willem Dafoe (the Green Goblin) and Alfred Molina (Dr Octopus) in pitting his wits against the webslinger.

The identity of the villain is currently being kept under wraps, however, with everyone from 'Venom' and 'Mysterio' to 'Kraven' being suggested on fan websites far and wide.

Speaking of the forthcoming project, Raimi said: 'In addition to the ongoing relationship between Peter Parker and MJ, these films are driven by actors who have brought our villains to life.

'Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis, and we all look forward to working with him.'

'Spider-Man 3' is due to roll before cameras early next year, with a May 4, 2007 release date currently pencilled in.
