Kevin Smith considers 'Dogma 2'

Having wrapped 'Clerks 2', the bearded auteur considers working on another sequel.

Nov 30 2005

Kevin Smith has revealed that he is considering making a sequel to his 1999 religious comedy, 'Dogma'.

Replying to a fan on his website, www.viewaskew.com, he said:

'Ever since 9/11, I have been thinking about a sequel of sorts. I mean, the worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent.'

'Back when I made 'Dogma', I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn't be forthcoming, as 'Dogma' was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I'd kinda shot my wad on the subject. Now? I think I might have more to say.

'The Last Scion would be at the epicentre of it. And she'd have to be played by Alanis [Morissette]. And we'd need a bigger budget - because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse.

'Scary thing is this: the film would have to touch on Islam. And unlike the Catholic League, when those cats don't like what you do, they issue a death warrant on yer ass (see Rushdie). And now that I've got a family, I'm not as free to stir the shit-pot as I was when I was single.'

However, considering production has just been wrapped on 'Clerks 2', which Smith has already hailed as 'my favourite flick I've ever made', perhaps he's getting a taste for sequels…

I personally would love to see Dogma2 for the simple fact that their is so much dram in the air regaurding different faiths and a sequel would address some of that in a way that says what's wrong and at the same time says that its a comedy and is meant to be enjoyed....and it would be nice if Ben and Matt returned in an opening scene that shows them being banished from heaven by god all the while having them state that killing in the name of god makes no sense, which is one of those hard topics right now, and by god banishing them....we see that in some way god knows that, and thus send them to wisconsin....from there the movie can go full tilt. Lol, I've been a huge fan of KS's work and Dogma was one of my favorite movies. It'd be incredible if he went on to the second one. Posted on May 06 2008 16:06
