Calvin's Barbershop is the heart of its Chicago community. Locals drop in, chat, even get their hair cut. But Calvin (Ice Cube) has bigger ideas. He wants to ditch it all for the music business. Will he sell out for a cool career? With a film as conventional as this, there isn't a moment when you'll doubt his answer. Perhaps because it promotes traditional values - respect women, crime doesn't pay, family comes first - the film shines in those rare scenes when it plays with received wisdom. In fact, Ice Cube's is the only disappointing performance: too much scowling from the sidelines.Author: AF
