A self-conscious Western which conflates the showdown with showmanship, as ageing gunmen Douglas and Cash prepare to charge admission to townsfolk eager to view the eponymous event, to be held (in parodic homage to the 'corrida' finales of Leone's Dollar films) in the local bullring. Director Johnson's heavyweight telemovie reputation was then still to be established; while writer Harold Jack Bloom, who here cheats badly with an inconclusive double ending, was also later to taste small-screen fame as a Jack Webb associate and creator of the series The DA and Hec Ramsey.Author: PT
