In an uneven Regency-period melodrama, neither Mercouri as a flashy-eyed gypsy girl nor Michell as the arrogant minor aristocrat she pursues to raise her standing could be said to give subtle performances. Neither are they aided by by a story that echoes the worst aspects of the costume romp in its mechanical contrivance. But seen as a typical Losey film in which class and sexual passion lead to death and destruction, it's not without interest, particularly in view of the director's bold attempt to match prints by Rowlandson and avoid Technicolor prettiness.Author: DT
