Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Who said John Hughes doesn't have artistic integrity? When preview audiences threw out his misfit romance in favour of preppie love at the end of Pretty in Pink (which Deutch also directed), Hughes sat right down and wrote the story again - this time with Stoltz in the Molly Ringwald role, Masterson as Jon Cryer, and Thompson as Andrew McCarthy. And this time it ends with the underdogs together. Oddly enough, it's this conclusion that feels phony, seeing as Stoltz has spent the last 80 minutes arranging his dream date with Lea. Watch the opening title sequence for a handy summation of the teen movie's staple ingredients: class, sex, music.
