Sparrow (1993)
Director: Franco Zeffirelli
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
It's 1854, and Maria (Bettis), soon to become a nun, is evacuated from plague-ridden Catania in Sicily to the opulent villa near Mt Etna shared by her loving father (Castle) and manipulative stepmother (Cusack). Here Maria meets Nino (Schaech), a family friend whose passionate love prompts a conflict between her instincts and her vocation. Finlay plays a nasty priest, and Redgrave a crazed nun. A full-blown very unpersuasive Zeffirelli melodrama, lamentably performed, with so many poorly framed wide-angles and zooms that no two shots seem capable of being edited together smoothly.Author: AO
