From Time Out Film Guide

Yuletide 1942 in a small Californian coastal town, and local boy Penn is hoping to step out with McGovern (who, unlike him, comes from the right side of the tracks) before induction into the Marines. This conflates a number of currently modish themes: coming of age in small-town USA; the last fling before manhood and possible death; nostalgia; and the crossing of social barriers. What it doesn't do, however, is give sufficiently dramatic incident; very little seems to happen in this social vacuum, and none of it is memorable. CPea.
