Yaacov Ben Dov: Father of the Hebrew Film (1989)
Director: Yaacov Gross
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Ukrainian Yaacov Ben Dov began as a still photographer before becoming Palestine's first documentary-maker. His footage of the emerging state of Israel is full of optimism - children plant groves of trees, schools rise, harvests are reaped. Palestine, Kafka wrote in his diary after seeing Ben Dov's work, needs earth, not lawyers. There's no shortage of Brits in pith helmets - General Allenby in 1917; Churchill and Balfour; High Commissioner Sir Herbert Samuel watching a camel race.Author: BC
