The dreadful movie (from the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis) that launched a million package tours: timid writer Bates falls spellbound to the outsize folkloric 'charm' of Quinn's philosophically boisterous Cretan Character, a role he's revamped with minor cultural compensations in almost every one of his films since.
