Universal Soldier: The Return (1999)
Director: Mic Rodgers
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This begins with an impressive set-piece: Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) and partner Maggie (Tom) are pursued by baddies on jet skis; predictably, however, the sequence turns out to be a test, by super computer SETH for his UniSols - soldiers brought back from the dead to be made into even more ruthless killing machines. Later, taking a break from babysitting Deveraux's daughter, SETH turns evil and sets out to kill Deveraux. Director Rodgers' debut comically tries to inject romance and pathos into what should, like part one, simply be a routine action movie. Filling out and greying at the temples, Van Damme is far from convincing, even in the tedious fight sequences.Author: TH
