Inspired by manga god Masamune Shirow's 1985 philosophical sci-fi tale, Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed uses state-of-the-art 3-D animation to envision the brave new world that emerges after a global war threatens the utopian city-state Olympus. A cyborg protector arises in the form of Briareos (Lyon), resurrected with artificial parts and now a little reminiscent of Jeff Koons's steel bunny on steroids. Make no mistake, the animation is breathtaking, even if the much-touted 3-D modeling recalls a high-end video game without interactivity. Shut your brain down for optimal viewing pleasure.
