Arakimentari (2004)
Director: Travis Klose
Movie review
From Time Out New York
What's the difference between an artistic nude and a smutty picture? Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki doesn't hedge his answer: There's no difference at all. Araki's fame—all right, infamy—rests on his pictures depicting bare-naked ladies, many in bondage. American filmmaker Travis Klose is clearly a fan, but he dutifully juxtaposes interviews with detractors who accuse the artist of being fundamentally disingenuous with the opinions of enthusiasts who locate Araki's erotic work within the tradition of sexually explicit 17th- to 19th-century printmakers. In his evenhanded doc, Klose reports and lets you decide.Author: MM
