Mad Hot Ballroom (2005)
Director: Marilyn Agrelo
Movie review
From Time Out New York
Even W.C. Fields, who publicly commended those who hated children, might have taken a shine to the precocious urchins profiled in this charming if slightly overlong documentary, which follows a bevy of adorable 11-year-olds from three different New York City public schools as they prepare for a citywide ballroom-dancing competition. Eventually, the spirited students at P.S. 115, a predominantly Dominican elementary school in Washington Heights, take center stage. In between lessons, they expound on gender relations, self-respect, drug abuse, marriage and poverty. They are at once impressively articulate, hysterically funny and first-rate dancers.Author: RS
