Sly and sneakily funny, Phil Morrison's debut feature takes the same Southern clichés that usually add up to coarse culture-clash comedy and plays them straight—well, almost straight. The story begins with a whirlwind romance that leads Chicago gallerista Madeleine (Davidtz) into marriage with George (Nivola), who fled his small North Carolina hometown for the big city. Heading down south to woo an outsider artist and her husband's eccentric family, Madeleine manages to alienate everyone with her kiss-kiss mannerisms and cosmopolitan condescension. It's a film about first impressions—and kinder second ones.Author: MM
