Movie review

From Time Out Chicago

Elaine May’s movies are symphonies of awkwardness, and in her outstanding 1972 version of The Heartbreak Kid, the humor derives almost entirely from watching Charles Grodin’s escalating assholery. Removing the original’s subtext of shiksappeal (the plot concerns a man who lusts after another woman on his honeymoon), the Farrellys make the wife not just irritating but a loony, which means that Ben Stiller’s efforts to escape her are entirely sympathetic, which means the movie is forced to plumb for comedy in less fruitful areas. Not as heartfelt as the other Farrelly movies, Heartbreak scores a few laughs with Corddry’s balding best friend and Jerry Stiller’s phenomenally inappropriate dad.
