Movie review

From Time Out Chicago

Tackling the early days of the nation of Israel, Chouraqui attempts a Solomonic solution, giving equal time to Jews defending their new country and Palestinians displaced from their homes. To carry off this balancing act, the film offers us Jewish Bobby Goldman (Feild) and Palestinian Saïd Chahine (Taghmaoui), who meet in America and become fast friends just after WWII. That friendship is tested when they wind up in the Middle East during the extremely eventful summer of 1948. The melodrama piles on, all done quite tastefully but not very engagingly. Chouraqui never quite figures out if history is a backdrop for the melodrama or his characters are symbols of larger historical ideas.
