'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris (2006)
Director: Raymond De Felitta
Movie review
From Time Out Chicago
In his obsessive pursuit of obscure jazz vocalist Jackie Paris, De Felitta comes perilously close to self-parody; he exudes outrage and bafflement at the fact that Paris, a “singers’ singer” beloved by jazz buffs in the know, didn’t become famous. He sounds like a caricature of a crazed fan who assumes his passion must and should be universally shared. De Felitta is saved from his lack of self-awareness by Paris himself, whom De Felitta discovers alive and well in his eighties and mellowed by years of obscurity. While De Felitta obsesses over facts that Paris wants to skip (Did he have a child? Who cares?), the singer muses on the precious gift of life. His simple message shines out, even if De Felitta is slow to get it.Author: Hank Sartin
