Movie review

From Time Out Chicago

One Missed Call may set a new standard for retreads: It’s a remake of a 2003 Takashi Miike quickie that was itself just a rip-off of The Ring (and its Japanese original, Ringu), with cell phones substituted for videotapes. The according downgrade in quality is evident. (Notwithstanding an appearance by the creepy-as-always Wise, and Sossamon’s efforts to keep a straight face while expostulating about a “spirit…moving though the cell phones attacking people,” the most charismatic presence in the film is Ed Burns.) Horror relies heavily on surprise, which this endeavor almost inherently lacks. But the movie’s amusingly derivative quality prevents it from being boring.
