Movie review
From Time Out Chicago
The era of British imperialism continues to wield its seductive power over filmmakers; stiff, proper Brits confront their baser side in steamy equatorial locales at a rate of about two films a year on celluloid. Henry Moores (Roache), an ambitious tea and spice planter in Kerala, India, in the 1930s, has gone native the old-fashioned way, boinking his servant Sajani (Das) while his wife (Ehle) is away. He’s also trying to build a road with the help of T.K. (Bose), an Indian whose loyalty to the Empire and to Moores will undergo a pretty severe trial. You can fill in the details, since every move and every lush image comes right out of the Merchant Ivory playbook.Author: Hank Sartin
