The Great Buck Howard (2008)
Director: Sean McGinly
Movie review
From Time Out Chicago
The world of semi-celebrity affords the backdrop for this bland comedy about a law-school dropout (Hanks) who goes to work as the personal assistant of an aging magician (Malkovich), whose fame peaked when you could still casually refer to The Tonight Show as “Carson” (“When I was on Carson…”). Hanks is a blander version of his father, without any of the sense of hidden zaniness. Malkovich, unsurprisingly, is quite convincing as a man whose ego surrounds him like an enveloping mist. Under McGinly’s flat direction, this movie is all soft edges, as if it’s been audience-proofed for your protection.Author: Hank Sartin
