Movie review

From Time Out Chicago

Less free-associative than recent Miyazaki films, Ponyo still gives the impression that it could run on indefinitely, as if its director’s imagination flowed like tap water. Yet it’s strangely beguiling all the same. This is Miyazaki’s variation on The Little Mermaid, and although it involves an anthropomorphic fish who becomes a little girl, the characters, par for the course, don’t seem particularly confused. Apart from the ecofriendly message, we have, as always, Miyazaki’s magnificently inventive animation, which is almost enough to carry the day.
