The Scouting Book for Boys (2009)
Director: Tom Harper
Movie review
From Time Out Online
More teenage growing pains for ‘Somers Town’ star Turgoose in this adeptly constructed rites-of-passage tale set in a Norfolk caravan park. Having grown up together on the site, he and Holliday Grainger are best pals, but he’s afraid to admit his simmering desire lest it spoil their friendship – thus disaster looms when she gets her first serious boyfriend. Excellent performances inscribe the adolescent passions in all their volatility, making effective the significant darkening of tone as events unfold, while an appreciable sense of place (exquisitely captured by ‘Fish Tank’ cameraman Robbie Ryan) makes the film distinctive. Shame the rather fey soundtrack choices work against the material though.Author: Trevor Johnston
